Peter Gallagher

Peter Gallagher's enduring commitment to his sport and later the many Gold Coast communities that he is involved in insurers his place as the inaugural member on the Wall of Sporting Legends.

A robust prop forward Gallagher embarked on a remarkable Rugby League career spanning 209 games for Brothers from 1957-67. At the age of 25 he began attaining representative honours which totalled 19 appearances for Queensland and 17 Tests for Australia including two Kangaroos tours.

He toured with the Kangaroos as a front-rower in 1963-64 and captained the Ashes winning second test in 1967-68 tour of Britain and France. Gallagher played alongside the likes of Graham Langlands, KenIrvine, Reg Gasnier, Kevin Ryan, Ron Coote and John Rapper.

The son of a policeman, Peter started as an apprentice electrical engineer after leaving Gregory Terrace Christian Brothers in Brisbane and then become a sales executive for Carlton & United Breweries.

He went on to be involved in a number of Gold Coast hotels as the public and and at the time of writing is it licensee at the Court House Hotel in Southport.

In his capacity as a committee member of 30 years, deputy chairman of 10 years, then chairman (serving a full term of 5 years) of the Gold Coast Turf Club Gallagher helped elevate the status of the club, acheive stand-alone race days and lift the Magic Millions carnival to its present high standing.
